First Aid

4 day first aid at work

Aim
To enable candidates to give adequate and effective first aid to a casualty at the workplace following an injury or illness using materials or HSE approved first aid equipment
 
Risk Assessment
First Aid equipment and first aid trained personnel in the workplace are requirements of Health and Safety law. In emergencies, First Aiders can act to prevent situations becoming major issues and can possibly limit potential sick leave through prompt action.

Course Syllabus

Day 1

Introduction to First Aid, principles of First Aid
How we breathe and what can go wrong
Assessment of a Casualty
Recovery Position
Rescue Breathing and CPR
Introduction of causes of unconsciousness
To include: asphyxia, heart attack, shock, fainting

Day 2

The circulatory system, blood and blood loss
The use of bandages and dressings
Control of bleeding – minor, major and internal
Unconsciousness to inc: stroke, seizures, head injuries, poison, diabetes
Transport of a casualty

Day 3

Duties of a First Aider, HSE Regulations and Contents of a First Aid Kit
Fractures, sprains and dislocations
Assessment and treatment of burns and scalds
Eye Injuries
Anaphylactic Shock
Dealing with emergency situations

Day 4

Revision of all and Practice, scenarios, Final Assessment

Early Years First Aid
2 day early years first aid
Aim
To enable candidates to give adequate and efficient first aid to a casualty, baby or child, following an injury or illness using materials or HSE approved first aid equipment.

Risk Assessment
First Aid equipment and first aid trained personnel in the workplace are requirements of Heath & Safety Law. In emergencies, First Aiders can act to prevent situations becoming major issues and can possibly limit potential sick leave through prompt action. Course is aimed at those working with children.

Course Syllabus
Follows recommended syllabus from SureStart, Pre-School Learning Alliance and the National Childminders Association
  • Planning for first aid emergencies involving babies and children
  • Dealing with emergencies involving babies and children
  •  Resuscitating babies and children
  • Recognising and dealing with shock in babies and children
  • Recognising and responding appropriately to anaphylactic shock in babies and children
  • Recognising and responding appropriately to electric shock in babies and children
  • Recognising and responding appropriately to bleeding in babies and children
  • Responding appropriately to burns and scalds in babies and children
  • Responding appropriately to choking in babies and children.
  • Responding appropriately to suspected fractures in babies and children
  • Responding appropriately to head, neck and back injuries in babies and children
  • Recognising and responding appropriately to cases of poisoning in babies and children
  • Responding appropriately to foreign bodies in eyes, ears and noses of babies and children
  • Responding appropriately to eye injuries in babies and children
  • Responding appropriately to bites and stings in babies and children
  • Responding appropriately with effects of extreme heat and cold in babies and children
  • Responding appropriately to febrile convulsions in babies and young children
  • Recognising and responding appropriately to the emergency needs of babies and children with chronic medical conditions including: - epilepsy, asthma, sickle cell, diabetes
  • Recognising and responding appropriately to meningitis and other serious sudden illness
